Greek Citizenship Pathways

From Residency to Full EU Citizenship. Here’s How It Works.
While the Golden Visa provides long-term residency, it can also be the first step toward obtaining Greek citizenship — and with it, the right to live, work, and travel freely across the European Union.

Benefits of Greek Citizenship

Full EU rights (residence, work, and study in any EU country)

Visa-free or visa-on-arrival travel to over 180 countries

No investment maintenance required after naturalisation

Main Naturalisation Route for Investors

Golden Visa holders may apply for Greek citizenship after:

  • 7 years of continuous legal residence in Greece
  • Passing a Greek language and civic knowledge exam
  • Demonstrating integration into Greek society (tax records, residence, etc.)

There is no requirement to live full-time in Greece during those 7 years, but you must maintain your residence permit without interruption.

Citizenship Through Education (for Children)

Children of Golden Visa holders can apply for Greek citizenship earlier if they complete part of their education in Greece:

Citizenship for the Whole Family

Once the main applicant is granted citizenship:

  • Minor children automatically gain citizenship
  • Spouses and adult children may apply separately through residence-based naturalization
